“Criollo” Cacao derived from original stock in the Los Limpios basin. This Cacao is from seed taken from huge, ancient trees which had been planted by the aboriginal Maya inhabitants of the basin centuries before; and conserved by the families there. The original trees were destroyed many decades ago.
The 3rd component of the “Guama” Model: Cacao under Inga shade. These young Cacao trees have been pruned into the ideal shape and are developing well. The Inga, too, has been lopped to provide about 25% insolation. The resulting mulch is largely controlling weed growth.
Although less than 2 years old, the Cacao trees are flourishing. An application of the “Magic Mix” has perhaps provoked an early flowering in these young trees.
